Cows...Did you know..?

Did you know a cow doesn't have upper front teeth. They have sharp lower teeth that push against their upper mouth palate to cut their food

They can detect odour up to 6 miles away

They can't actually see the colour red, so what those 'bullfighters' think they are doing dancing around with red cloths...

Cows have excellent hearing and hear sounds at similar and higher frequencies to humans

They move their jaws approx 40,000 times a day

They consume approx 45 kg of food and 180 ltrs of water a day

They are social beings, who don't enjoy spending time alone

Naturally they live for approx 20 years

Cows are very protective of their young and will attack, and even kill, anything they see as a threat

Their pregnancy lasts approx 9mths

Female calves will naturally suckle until they are around nine months old and stay with their mothers, remaining grooming and grazing partners for their whole lives 

Males are weaned at around 12 months old and would then leave the herd and join a bachelor herd

It is extremely common for calves to establish lifelong friendships when only a few days old

Their heart beats approx 60 - 70 beats a minute... the same as the human animal
